Equipment

Workers should dress appropriately for current weather, with rain gear, extra sweaters, etc. left in a nearby vehicle. Don't forget your thermos bottles and lunches. Remember, too, that it can turn hot quickly, and sun block and sunglasses can be a great comfort when needed.

Gloves are a must for dealing with wet and unpleasant stuff at the bottom of the ditch! A First Aid kit is an excellent idea, especially in the hands of someone who knows how to use it. Ditches are frequently wet, so rubber boots are the ideal footgear. Sneakers are risky, and sandals are definitely not suitable.

A roll of brightly coloured "flagging tape" may be useful for marking anything too heavy to lift. Items such as potentially dangerous containers are best left to specialists. Fortunately, these aren't commonly found.

Again, just to be on the safe side, volunteers should use extreme caution when handling what might be medical waste, syringes, medications, or other suspicious-looking materials
