2011 Final Report - Envirothon NB

This year, the NB Envirothon was again an exceptional success and the program continues to grow with more teams entering than ever before.

We held the Provincial competition back in the Fredericton region and utilized the Kilarney Lake site for our field testing venue and the University of New Brunswick facilities for the oral presentation part of the competition. A well earned congratulation goes out to all the participating teams and advisors and especially to Oromocto High School who came away with the top prize and the honour of representing our Province in the Canon Envirothon competition where teams from across Canada and the United States participate for the North American championship. This was the crowning jewel of this year's program here in New Brunswick because we hosted the North American competition at Mount Allison University in Sackville. When the week long event was finished and the dust had cleared, three of the top 5 teams (out of 53 from across North America) were from Canada. Manitoba and Ontario placed first and second with our NB team finishing in fourth. We are extremely proud of our NB team from Oromocto and congratulations to all who participated.

As I have said many times in the past, I would like to thank the many individuals and organizations who have dedicated their time and resources to make both these events this year such successes. We have gradually built an amazing pool of advisors, professionals and volunteers who we can call upon to give their all in organizing and delivering this great event each year. Without them, it would be impossible to provide such a well run program. A special thanks to our steering and planning committees and especially to our test writers and judges for your commitment to Envirothon NB. And last but not least, I would also like to thank the Canadian Forestry Association of New Brunswick for coordination of the program each year and to the dedicated staff who I have had the pleasure to work with over the years. The CFANB does a tremendous job in promoting environmental stewardship and education.

On behalf of the Envirothon NB steering committee, thanks to all involved for an unforgettable year and we look forward to the next.

2010 Final Report - Envirothon NB

The Envirothon NB competition marked its 10th anniversary this past May with the largest team turnout ever. After much success and a dramatic increase in 2009, the steering committee was ecstatic with the continued growth in the Program in 2010. This year we decided to take the competition out of the familiar bounds of the Fredericton area and travel to Moncton and Mount Allison University in Sackville. With the help of many volunteers and the support from our valued sponsors, the competition was a huge success despite the challenging weather conditions faced during the field tests. Enthusiastic teams from throughout the Province and a team from Quebec had no complaints and the venues were tremendous. All our best wishes for our winning team from Stanley High School as they compete in California in July.

It is the dedication of many individuals and the coordination efforts of CFANB staff that makes this event a pleasure to be a part of. Each year we learn more and each year things get a little easier. We are always challenged with the issue of funding but seem to some how come through in the end. The students who participate make all the trials and tribulations worthwhile. Much has been learned and hopefully the program has imparted an awareness and a sense of environmental stewardship in many of these young people.

On behalf of the Envirothon NB steering committee, I would like to thank all those students, teachers and advisors, volunteers, judges and test writers, sponsors and especially CFANB for their valued contributions to the successes achieved to date and look forward to our greatest challenge yet - hosting the 2011 Canon Envirothon in Sackville, New Brunswick.
